Urban design workflow

Skill manualsReview draft

On this page

Explore an urban district from a satellite image, map, or planning base, producing a concept master plan and spatial structure analysis.

Prepare materials

Provide a recognizable, preferably closed boundary, orientation, and scale, along with the brief, city, and key metrics. State whether this is renewal retaining existing fabric, redevelopment, or new construction. Identify retained roads, water, buildings, and public spaces.

Develop the concept

  1. Select this Skill and describe the goal and retention constraints.
  2. Confirm the boundary. Add annotations rather than placing proposals on an ambiguous large-area map. Surroundings are context, not automatically part of the intervention.
  3. Check extracted metrics and renewal mode. Resolve conflicting requirements before proceeding.
  4. Review concepts responding to local conditions, spatial connections, open-space structure, or access, and select or revise a direction.
  5. Compare roads, groups, open spaces, and major uses across the master plan and analysis diagram. Identify specific discrepancies.

Review in order

Check boundaries and retained features first, spatial structure second, and graphics last. An attractive generated layout does not prove precise compliance with area metrics, traffic capacity, or statutory controls. Continue calculations with original planning and survey data.

For quick alternatives, use Four-panel concept exploration. For existing character, color, and scale, use Urban character, color, and scale analysis. A single-building task does not need the whole urban workflow.
