Construction cost estimation workflow

Skill manualsReview draft

On this page

Identify work items, materials, and estimate assumptions from an architectural, interior, or landscape proposal, producing a cost table and explanatory images.

Prepare materials

Supply renderings, city, scope, and scale. Add building area, stories, and height, or actual fit-out/landscape area and quality level. Include material schedules, rates, or client budgets. Define exactly which works are included.

Build the estimate

  1. Select this Skill and define the question, such as facade works excluding the main structure, using a supplied area table.
  2. Check identified structure, materials, and work items. Correct similar-looking but differently priced materials before comparing totals.
  3. Verify quantity and area sources. Prefer supplied data; keep image-derived quantities and proportions explicit as assumptions.
  4. Check region, date, specification, and scope of price references. Review the suitability of neighboring-city or experience-based rates.
  5. Check subtotals, units, inclusions, and explanatory details. Discuss alternatives for expensive items instead of simply reducing the total.

Use the estimate

This supports design-stage comparison and identification of cost drivers. Images do not establish full quantities, hidden construction, or site conditions; illustrative details are not construction drawings. Replace assumptions with actual areas, specifications, and quotations as design develops.

For choosing designs within a fixed ceiling, use Budget-constrained design and cost coordination.
